The WNBA was added to 2K's lineup three years ago with NBA 2K20. Therefore, it's somewhat surprising that it took this long for a female athlete to be featured on the cover -- particularly since 2K Sports often releases multiple versions of the game that feature different athletes. In the case of 2K21 was a good example. It featured Damian Lillard on the last-generation console versions, Zion Williamson on the PS5 and Series X versions, and the exclusive "Mamba Forever" edition in honor of late Kobe Bryant.

The standard cover will feature Luka Doncic, the Dallas Mavericks' star player, while the NBA 75th Anniversary Edition cover features NBA legends Dirk Nowitzki and Kareem AbdulJabbar. The other edition includes the Washington Wizards' Rui Hachiura. This edition will be only available in Japan.
